Sustainability

 

Living in an area of such outstandng natural beauty as we are fortunte enough to do, we feel it is imperative that we run The Gordon in a way which has little to no impact on the natural environment.

Since taking over in 2020 we have made a vast swathe of changes right across the business.

​

All our large inefficient appliances have now been replaced with new A-rated energy efficient equivalents.  Our central heating boiler has been changed for a condensing example.  We harvest all the water from our tumble drier and use it to water all the plants in Station Square.  When cooking guest breakfasts we almost completely use air frying which eliminates the need to use the larger ovens.  Our duvets are now filled with recycled plastic pellets.  Our food is all sourced either locally or hyper-locally to minimise food miles.  Our business mileage in our hybrid petrol-electric car is under 1000 miles per year.  Fair trade products are in all bedrooms for guest snacks.  Each guest bedroom now has recycling facilities so we can recycle the maximum amount of waste.  We have cut our 'non-recyclable' waste to such a degree that we no longer need weekly collections of waste but we do now have five recycling bins!  Our electricity is 100% sourced from a fully renewable tariff.  Co-operative project with Halls next door to create a wildlife refuge in the garden spaces.

Basically every part of our business, every purchase we make, every decision we take has a sustainability dimension to it.

Co-owner Steve spent nearly 15 years in senior sustainability roles with large organisations in Scotland.  He won a Green Apple Award, Best Large Green Company, a VIBES award, was an environment & sustainability trainer and was on the 2010 top 20 Sustainability professionals in Scotland.  He drives the sustainability agenda here at The Gordon and would be happy to discuss this aspect with guests.
